What we do

Established in the 1970s to provide a forum for bodies interested in professional legal education, the Joint Standing Committee for Legal Education in Scotland (JSC) has influenced the development of the profession for several decades.

Indeed, when the Advisory Committee on Legal Education and Conduct was established in the 1980s in England and Wales, no such body was set up in Scotland due to the existence of the JSC.

In 2006, in light of the expansion in the number of qualifying law degrees, the remit and composition of the JSC was changed to allow for representatives from not only professional bodies such as Universities and the Law Society, but also for the introduction of 3 Lay Representatives.

Each constituent body of the JSC brings to the attention of the JSC any matter which is likely to affect significantly the interests of any other constituent body and which falls within the remit of the Committee.

The work of the JSC continues today and members have a keen interest in all aspects of legal education and training.
