Location: Edinburgh (Central)
Time Commitment: Up to four half-days per year (meetings are usually in September, January and April)

Work of the Lay Representatives and Required Expertise

The JSC is a consultative body the aims and purposes of which are to act as a facilitator promoting the interests of legal education, both at the level of academic training and in relation to legal professional training up to the level of professional qualification and beyond. It comprises representatives from the Faculty of Advocates, the Law Society of Scotland, the Judicial Institute and Higher Education Institutions in Scotland involved in the education and training of lawyers as well as three Lay Representatives. These Lay Representatives should not be legally qualified and preferably should not work in a law firm, but have a general interest in the practice of law in Scotland and the workings of the Scottish Justice system, and also in the professional education and training of lawyers.

The work of a lay member of the committee involves reading the relevant Committee papers and attending meetings of the main Committee and of occasional working groups, usually in Edinburgh. Appointments are initially for a three year period. The time commitment for each appointment is roughly four half day meetings per year.

Previous experience of committee work either in the private or public sector in professional or educational bodies would be advantageous, although not essential. Enthusiasm and interest in all aspects of legal education and training are however necessary.
